Chruch architecture
Spridd won the 2017 competition for Stockholm City Mission with the extensive renovation of St. Paul's Church at Mariatorget. After five years of work with overall responsibility for the building and interior, the church was inaugurated in November 2022 and was nominated for the prestigious Kasper Salin Prize. During this period, Spridd has built up expertise in the field and received a growing number of assignments for the Swedish Church in close collaboration with KFS, the Church Property Partnership.
Several of the assignments have in common that they address a growing issue within the Swedish Church; whether and how it is possible to integrate parts of the parish activities in the church building. With the goal of continuing to be a relevant, open, active, and economically viable operation in a time of declining membership numbers, the issue is relevant for many parishes across the country. The ongoing work with the 1600s church Holy Trinity Church in Gävle is probably the most extensive and complex work in the field.
Other assignments focus on updating technical systems, increasing accessibility, energy efficiency, and improved evacuation and fire safety. The ongoing restoration of the 1100s church Botkyrka Church is an example of this.
In a number of projects, Spridd has supported parishes that want to develop new housing within their existing properties, work where Spridd's extensive experience as a developer/building architect can fully contribute to overall responsibility in the project. In these assignments, there is initially a thorough reading of the cultural-historical situation to evaluate the site's opportunities and potential. Responsive dialogue and early collaboration with the County Administrative Board and other stakeholders are key to a successful process and successful final project.
The office's goal is, consultation with the affected parishes, clients, and authorities, provide culturally significant and innovative answers to current questions, technically, socially, economically, and architecturally.
